The 4Cs of Diamonds: How to Choose the Perfect Stone (2026)

1 min read

Whether you choose natural or lab-grown, every diamond is judged by the same four qualities — the 4Cs: Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat. Master them and you’ll buy a better stone for your money in 2026.

Cut — the most important C

Cut determines how a diamond returns light. An excellent cut sparkles brilliantly; a poor cut looks dull even at high colour and clarity. Always prioritise cut quality first.

Colour

Diamond colour is graded D (colourless) to Z (light yellow). Near-colourless grades (G–J) offer the best balance of beauty and value for most settings.

Clarity

Clarity grades internal inclusions from Flawless to Included. Many VS–SI stones are “eye-clean” — no visible inclusions — at a far better price than flawless.

Carat

Carat is weight, not size. Smart buyers shop just below round numbers (e.g. 0.9ct instead of 1.0ct) for a similar look at a lower price — and lab-grown stones stretch the budget further, as explained in our lab-grown vs natural guide.

Putting the 4Cs together

Balance the 4Cs to your priorities: a brilliant cut, an eye-clean clarity and a near-colourless grade usually beats chasing a single “perfect” number. Choosing a ring? See 2026 engagement ring trends.
